Lovina Yavari is an actress, artist, and model-based in Toronto, ON. For all of her photographic shoots, she directs, styles, builds props and does her own hair and makeup. Her style is heavily inspired by her favorite anime’s, comic books, Japanese street fashion, video games, or films. Most of her time is spent either designing shoots, playing Warhammer, or acting.
She is currently working on a new sci-fi/thriller TV series called Salvation. She plays a computer hacker named Naomi. You can catch the show on CBS!
Dye Magazine: You are a busy young woman with a plethora of talents, including acting, modeling, makeup, designing, set building, and the list goes on. Where does your real/main passion live?
Lovina Yavari: “It’ll always be somewhere within the arts, but I have a hard time sticking to just one category. I get bored easily. So I guess my true passion in life is always doing something new and challenging. Whether it be travel, something adrenaline related (skydiving, gun range, motorcycle), or just trying new food. I enjoy living my life like it’s an adventure. Routines bore the shit out of me.”
Dye Magazine: Tell me about playing Naomi on the CBS sci-fi tv series Salvation. Do you have a lot in common with this computer hacker?
Lovina Yavari: “Working on this show has been an incredible experience. I’m beyond grateful someone finally took a chance with me. Before this role, I played smaller parts in tv shows, this was my first lead type character, and it’s opened many doors for me. I put a lot of myself into her, the only real difference between us is, I’m not actually a professional computer hacker, and I personally swear a shit ton. Naomi does not. Not because she doesn’t want to, but because of the network the shows on lol. It’s supposed to be family-friendly.”
Dye Magazine: It looks like you are going to be in a lead role for the upcoming Halloween Reflections. As a big fan of slasher flix, I was trying to find out more about this Michael Myers movie. Are you allowed to share the plot basis and about the character you play?
Lovina Yavari: “Yes! I’m very excited to work on this project; I am a massive slasher fangirl as well. I can’t really say much other than I play one of the lead characters, which the director who’s also the writer, based off of me. Michael Myers will be aged in this, and his history is now an urban legend. There are also some witchcraft themes. We’re aiming to have the film out by October. The team involved is incredible; the other actors have been in tv shows such as Dark Matter, Nikita, and Reign. The director is a massive nerd; he made a Terminator short film previously, which was incredibly high quality. So expect the same for this.”
Dye Magazine: Who in your life is your biggest supporter? How do they show you that they support your life in the arts?
Lovina Yavari: “I think boyfriends automatically fall into this category, so aside from him. I’d say my buddies Jeremy and Mike. I can call them up and tell them pretty much anything, they know my darkest secrets, and some embarrassing shit, but they still stick around. This career tends to make you feel really amazing about yourself and incredibly low to a point where you question your self-worth. It all comes from the constant rejection that you eventually build a thick skin for. No matter what, at the end of the day, I’m still human. Some things are going to break through that barrier and affect me. So I’m grateful for all my friends that listen to my nonsense self-doubt. As artists, we are incredibly self-critical. You need friends to help pull your head outta your ass now and then to see things from another perspective.”
Dye Magazine: You recently took a trip to Japan. Was this the first time? How was it? Where did you go, and what amazing things did you see and do?
Lovina Yavari: “That was my first time! I had mixed feelings. It was eye-opening to see the culture first hand finally. The country is insanely segregated. Women have separate subway lines because of the rampant sexual assaults. The country encourages vices; bars are open until 5 am, you can buy alcohol anywhere/drink it publicly, including sake vending machines on the street for 100 yen (1$), cigarettes in vending machines for 400 yen (4$), and there’s a shit ton of sex shops. It got a little repetitive. Sadly the fashion scene wasn’t as crazy or inspiring as I imagined it to be. Harajuku was still busy, but it was mostly tourists that wore funky clothing. Regardless, I’d still go back and visit, because Gundam kits are so fucking cheap there, like I legit bought over 20. So naturally, I visited the Gundam Hotel, Inari Shrine, Osaka Castle, and Himeji Castle, to name a few. I traveled all over from Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Himeji.”
Dye Magazine: What hobbies do you have beyond the world of art? What can you be found doing on a day off?
Lovina Yavari: “I love shooting guns, throwing knives, and riding motorcycles. But since I’m in Canada, doing most of those things are weather dependent. So it’s usually playing something on Steam, MTG, or binge-watching shows to wind down.”
Dye Magazine: I don’t know anything about Warhammer. Tell me about what it is and why it is so much fun?
Lovina Yavari: “Warhammer is a tabletop fantasy battle game. I play 40k, which takes place in space. I fucking adore this game because you literally have to build your own army to partake. You buy the kits from Games Workshop (or bootleg ones online 😉 lol), assemble them any way you like, and paint them. 90% of the fun is the process of creating your squad. I play as Dark Eldar, which are elf space pirates, and Tau, which are basically adorable little Samurai Gundam Robots.”
Dye Magazine: Everyone has had at least one bad haircut. Can you tell me about yours?
Lovina Yavari: “Lord, I’ve had bad haircuts almost my entire life. It’s only been recently that I got my shit together. The worst though was my bangs. I used to have really tiny baby bangs; I’d cut them myself. Well, when you fuck up by making it uneven, THERE IS NO going back. You have to wait till that shit grows out. Live with it. And bangs can do a lot to give the illusion of a different face shape, so I looked like a fucking egg for a few weeks.”
Dye Magazine: What is your go-to hairstyle for summer?
Lovina Yavari: “Pigtails!”
